No Sleep Till Brooklyn 12 min

Ep 5: The Week Before the Event

It's days before the event. The team is on location making final arrangements. In this episode you see how the final hours of planning go before attendees and speakers start to arrive.

[MUSIC]

0:08

We need to get people there.

0:12

A very certain amount of people.

0:16

A very certain type of people.

0:20

What do you mean type of people?

0:25

Marketers.

0:27

No sleep, no!

0:30

[MUSIC]

0:37

Brooklyn!

0:38

[MUSIC]

0:41

>> I don't remember any event or

0:45

early stage companies that wasn't stressful in the early days.

0:50

I think there's certainly a trend where attendance is gonna look

0:55

terrible probably up until just a few weeks beforehand.

0:59

So we're gonna blow out the numbers.

1:03

Maybe, maybe not.

1:04

But at the end, I think it's about the experience of the people who are gonna

1:07

end up being there anyways.

1:09

That's what's gonna matter most.

1:10

[MUSIC]

1:14

>> Any pressure on you?

1:16

>> When I say my friend, you said a lot of things about it.

1:20

>> Trust in the marketing team.

1:22

>> Trust in the marketing team.

1:25

Cool, that's a cucumber.

1:27

>> That's what I'm talking about.

1:29

What are you looking at?

1:30

>> Dude, I'm looking at LinkedIn notifications.

1:33

>> Damn, come on.

1:34

[LAUGH]

1:35

>> I'm looking to see who liked my shoes on LinkedIn.

1:38

>> No, that's sick.

1:39

>> I like them.

1:40

>> We're one week out from the event.

1:43

We are promoting that we're gonna have 300 people there.

1:47

And where it sits right now, we have just about 200 people there.

1:51

And when you're seven days out, you start to get a little nervous.

1:55

We have sent the emails.

1:57

We have published all of our registration messaging.

2:00

I have filmed enough walk and talk videos, whatever.

2:04

People have heard about cold in our, anyone who wanted to register has

2:09

registered.

2:10

And I see a lot of industry professionals, analysts talking about how the

2:16

behavior

2:17

has changed where a lot of the registrations are now back end loaded.

2:20

We got seven days and we're gonna need that to be true for us and

2:25

we're gonna make all of our successful.

2:27

>> Hey, okay, how's everything going on?

2:29

>> How do you want me to get in?

2:30

Because everybody wants to talk about this in this conversation.

2:32

What if, because we can't do the center.

2:37

So, when we're listening to the center, can we do an off center going this way?

2:44

With our purple carpet here, we'll figure out placement of monitor and

2:49

logo and furniture and everything.

2:51

We don't have to go all the way under, it's stairwell, but

2:54

this could be your 12 by 15 here.

2:56

>> Okay, our first like VIP speaker.

3:00

>> Yeah.

3:00

>> I'm gonna call it fun.

3:01

>> Yeah.

3:02

>> Mom is calder at 12.5.

3:03

>> Okay, we've got a runner who's gonna take them from here to the suite.

3:08

And he has an off-heart group from Gabe.

3:09

And in the suite, he's gonna get in.

3:11

>> What's the like sofa shot?

3:13

>> In the situation.

3:15

>> The thought process is there's a couch that's against like a window.

3:19

They have five questions that we insert out by answer short form.

3:22

They just knock out one another.

3:24

My fear is that they think this is an audience plus pitch.

3:29

So like we need someone to be like coaching.

3:33

>> Lots of speakers are gonna be like paparazzi.

3:36

>> Yeah.

3:37

>> Totally.

3:38

>> I think that's kind of cool.

3:39

>> That's cool.

3:39

>> That's cool for it on that.

3:40

>> Why are these?

3:41

>> Are they easier to start?

3:42

>> I didn't think- >> It's gonna make it feel like-

3:45

>> Way more is going.

3:46

>> Yeah.

3:47

>> Cool.

3:48

>> All right, so call off letting us in the room.

3:52

Elaine is intercepting.

3:53

>> Yeah.

3:54

>> You got to go to Elaine about that.

3:55

>> Are we starting to write paparazzi still?

3:57

>> Mm-hmm.

3:58

>> And we can't do mine.

3:59

>> Since it's so tight though, we might want to just like 30 seconds and roll,

4:04

you know?

4:04

>> Yeah.

4:05

>> Like go live, roll it.

4:06

>> Let me say like a two minute countdown and 12.

4:09

>> Oh man.

4:10

>> Is there a contact information you're doing in Maple?

4:13

>> Yeah.

4:14

>> But the virus can be a gold naw brand and you can use the countdown.

4:18

>> Okay.

4:19

>> The countdown will be great.

4:20

>> Okay.

4:21

>> And then the current show flow, the conclusion would be this is the

4:24

transition.

4:25

By the way, I don't even know if I can open it.

4:27

I'm not a narrative idea.

4:28

>> If we use this and then we go straight to a clip from your- there's a lot of

4:34

prerecorded

4:35

stuff there.

4:36

>> You know what though, it might be good to have a prerecorded countdown that

4:40

's just

4:40

a video you might make.

4:41

>> That's what I'm saying.

4:44

>> Put a countdown clock on the bottom.

4:46

>> Yeah.

4:47

>> That's what I'm saying.

4:48

>> That's right.

4:49

>> And then I'll have it playing.

4:50

>> After that video runs for minute 23, camera, go live to the wide, I'm

4:54

assuming, with the

4:55

three folks at the desk.

4:57

>> Yeah.

4:58

>> We talk about the three camera set up, where we do it three.

5:00

So I'm going to have one of those PTZ cameras, a wide shot, one of those PTZ

5:06

cameras set

5:07

shots, so I can transition between when somebody's speaking singularly versus

5:11

when it's in between

5:12

times or when it's a panel discussion.

5:14

>> I have another camera that I wanted to look out onto the city.

5:17

>> My one fear with doing just like a shot out of the skyline with like a logo

5:23

on it,

5:24

it feels like we could have just prerecorded that.

5:27

And I think watching what's happening behind stage feels like you're still like

5:32

in it.

5:32

>> Right.

5:33

>> You know what I'm saying?

5:34

>> Okay.

5:35

>> I'm going to kind of figure out exactly what you're looking for.

5:39

>> 101.

5:42

We go live.

5:43

So we go to Brianna on either a teleprompter or some type of device.

5:46

Hey everyone, welcome to Golden Hour Live.

5:49

My name is Brianna Doe and I'm going to be your host over the next four hours

5:52

to be

5:53

dive into the marketing.

5:54

>> We're coming to you live from Brooklyn, New York, one of my favorite cities

5:57

in the

5:57

world.

5:58

That's the Manhattan skyline behind me and the inaugural Golden Hour conference

6:01

is happening

6:02

just about 24 hours below us right now.

6:04

>> Over the next four hours, you're going to be hearing from 16 marketing when

6:08

you're

6:08

going to be there.

6:09

>> We're building the future of marketing through own media.

6:12

And cut.

6:13

So there's like different segments like banter, interview, and then she looks

6:16

to camera and

6:17

says earlier today during the opening keynote, Anthony laid out his vision for

6:20

the whole

6:21

thing.

6:22

>> The whole thing.

6:23

He's for the next gen marketing playbook.

6:24

Let's take a look.

6:25

>> Yeah, I'm nervous for the broadcast.

6:27

I think it hit me for the first time that we're literally running two events at

6:31

the same

6:32

time.

6:33

I just reviewed the show flow and it just, all of these questions are now

6:38

coming up around

6:40

execution.

6:42

And I'm realizing I haven't spent enough time even thinking about the virtual

6:45

broadcast

6:46

as I have been on the in-person event.

6:48

So I'm pretty nervous.

6:50

>> I'm going to have to like this.

6:53

>> Yeah, for sure.

6:54

>> It's going to be a sticking out and it's all weather through.

6:59

>> I think about lighting on this.

7:00

>> It's a cool, cool, cool challenge.

7:03

>> We just did a walkthrough of the production studio.

7:06

It looks beautiful.

7:07

It looks like an ESPN kind of, you know, anchor desk, which is really cool.

7:13

The backdrop looks like green screen.

7:17

But there is so much light coming from the backdrop that anyone who sits behind

7:23

the desk

7:24

is completely in the shadows.

7:26

>> We're getting mostly the lighting within the camera versus like setting up.

7:30

>> Yeah, I do the lighting mostly in the camera mirror and I think it's great.

7:34

I didn't bring any additional light gates or anything like that.

7:38

Just because I don't think that we're needed as well.

7:40

So I even though it seems like a light.

7:42

>> Okay.

7:43

>> But I can make all the adjustments from there actually.

7:45

>> Yeah.

7:46

>> As long as we check it out, I think that would be great.

7:47

>> Yeah.

7:48

>> Just as I was engaging with the team here, they don't have any lights.

7:53

And we're going live in 24 hours.

7:56

And I just am starting to freak out a little bit.

8:00

>> That was great.

8:01

>> A lot of you too are the not shrimp in that.

8:06

I'm not trying to find it all on.

8:12

>> Yeah.

8:13

>> Yeah.

8:14

>> With Audience Plus, you can easily launch a media property on your domain

8:17

that enables

8:18

your audience to subscribe directly to your videos, your articles, podcasts and

8:22

more.

8:23

And since it's all no code, you can run your entire media operation within the

8:27

marketing

8:28

team.

8:29

Was this okay and it's full form?

8:30

>> All of this is great.

8:31

It's just that one long slide that if you break out, you're going to-

8:36

>> Visually?

8:37

>> You think it'll break out more?

8:38

>> Okay.

8:39

>> So start here.

8:40

>> Yeah, do the slides first and then go back and figure out the-

8:43

>> Yeah.

8:44

Should I try it again?

8:45

And you guys tell me if it feels better because of the way the slides are

8:48

different and then

8:49

specifically-

8:50

>> Little time.

8:51

>> I can run it here on the timer.

8:53

You know that content is the oxygen for the marketing flywheel.

8:58

However, we have to evolve our intention away from producing content for

9:03

algorithmic

9:03

value or cheap conversions, content that's actually produced for human value.

9:09

And this means-

9:10

>> This is master format format.

9:11

>> New format.

9:12

>> So first of all, was that a more effective visual?

9:14

>> It's top heavy.

9:15

I'm just wondering if there's anything extraneous that you can cut.

9:18

>> I wanted to add that agency line which is the additive line here.

9:22

Just get in and where is it?

9:24

>> I like the agency line.

9:25

If we don't tip the cap to the agency, I think we'll regret it.

9:28

>> Yeah.

9:29

Why don't we leave it for now?

9:30

Let's rehearse it on the main stage and see how it feels.

9:33

>> Okay.

9:34

All right, so what do you- for your section, do you want to click through?

9:36

Do you want to try it?

9:37

>> Yeah, I read all this.

9:39

And then I break it down very simplistically, I think, which is like, hey, we

9:43

all know what

9:43

a media company is.

9:45

If you're in the room, you probably agree that's the future of A2B content

9:49

marketing.

9:50

>> Basically, like, I need to see more phones up.

9:54

I'm literally measured by this number, so to get it all away.

9:56

>> I'm literally measured on this number.

9:59

So I need to see more phones going up, right?

10:02

>> Yeah, and you can be like, all right, I'm leaving, I'm leaving.

10:07

Seriously though, I need to-

10:09

>> Yeah.

10:10

>> And then you're walking off and I'm like getting ready to go again.

10:12

And then you pop back up in a second.

10:13

>> Yeah, yeah.

10:14

>> Real quick though, real quick.

10:15

>> Okay.

10:16

>> Before I leave- >> Oh, sorry.

10:17

>> Before I leave, I just want to tempt you with something.

10:20

Just like, real quick.

10:22

I've got a video for you, so-

10:24

>> Three, two, one.

10:26

>> Hey guys, welcome to EZCAD.

10:29

>> So I'm going to add it to this slide, roll video.

10:33

So that's what I tasted for this show flow.

10:36

We are the hosts, we're the ambassadors of the brand.

10:39

We, I forget what the saying was against us, and we eat last.

10:44

Is that what it was?

10:45

>> Yeah, we eat last.

10:46

>> So if we have a guest that needs a chair, we get up, you give them the chair

10:50

, if they

10:50

need food or whatever, we make way for our guests.

10:55

Again, we're really small team right now, but at scale it's like, don't get

10:59

hammered

10:59

at the party.

11:00

You're responsible, all that sort of thing.

11:03

It's a massive dividend on our ability to treat people really great at these

11:07

things.

11:07

I bumped into Ruben from the audience plus, he was so nice, he was so

11:11

accommodating,

11:11

that stuff really just goes a long way.

11:13

So let's build that reputation with our events.

11:16

[MUSIC]

11:22

>> Didn't come on stage with me?

11:24

Yeah, in the middle of the presentation?

11:26

>> Yes.

11:27

>> In front of 300 people?

11:28

>> Yes.

11:28

>> What do you say?

11:29

>> I don't know, and I can say anything, but I can just do it next to you.

11:33

>> Just stand next to me during it?

11:35

>> Okay.

11:36

>> That works.

11:37

What do you think I do for work?

11:39

>> Make money?

11:41

>> I used to.

11:43

I used to before I started this company.

11:46

What do you think all these people are here for?

11:49

>> I forgot.

11:51

>> You forgot?

11:53

When what do you think all the people are here for?

11:55

>> Um.

11:56

>> Uh-uh.

11:57

>> You don't know?

11:58

>> Uh-huh.

11:59

>> Do you have any guesses?

12:01

What?

12:02

>> Um-huh.

12:03

>> They're here for mommy.

12:05

That's probably right.

12:06

>> I know I have a lot of nails.

12:09

>> You have gold nails?

12:10

You're on brand.

12:11

So you are a marker.

12:12

[MUSIC]

12:22

[silence]
